SATURDAY: REV. SHARPTON, 100 NAN MEMBERS TO SHOP AT EAST HARLEM COSTCO TO SUPPORT COMPANY’S COMMITMENT TO DEI AS TRUMP CONTINUES ATTACKS ON FEDERAL POLICIES DURING FIRST DAYS IN OFFICE
—Day of Action Comes in Wake of Rev. Sharpton’s Plans to Lead Boycott this Spring of Companies that Drop Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Programs
NEW YORK, NY (January 23, 2025) – Rev. Al Sharpton this Saturday will lead 100 National Action Network (NAN) members to the Costco in East Harlem to shop in support of the company’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) as the policies face growing attacks from President Trump and within the private sector. Saturday’s day of action follows Rev. Sharpton’s announcement this week that NAN will lead a boycott in the next 90 days of two companies that have dropped their DEI commitments amid public pressure.
“On Monday, as we celebrated the legacy of Dr. King while Donald Trump took the oath of office, I promised to not only boycott companies that abandon their DEI commitments but support those who upheld them,” said Rev. Al Sharpton, Founder and President of National Action Network (NAN). “Costco has stood by their DEI programs because they see them as both the right thing to do and a smart business strategy. NAN will live by its own promise to support the companies who support us, which is why dozens of us will shop at Costco this Saturday.”
Rev. Sharpton formally announced the council on Monday during NAN’s MLK Day Rally at Metropolitan AME Church in Washington, D.C. His remarks on the need to safeguard DEI were delivered as Trump was sworn in as president for the second time, promising to target federal DEI programs in his inaugural address. To view Rev. Sharpton’s keynote King Day address, click here.
On Tuesday, Trump began to follow through on this vow by ordering all federal DEI staff on paid leave. Agencies have until the end of the month to submit a plan to the Office of Personnel Management on how they will shrink the number of employees who work on their respective DEI programs. A subsequent wave of executive orders have sought to crush DEI initiatives in both the public and private sectors. Among them is a directive for the federal government to look into the DEI policies of public companies.
