New Orleans New Year’s Day Terrorist Attack
—January 1, 2025
Good afternoon! Today, the City of New Orleans, its citizens, its way of life, its tourists, its political, business and faith based communities, and its freedom came under attack in the wee hours of the morning on the first day of the New Year. There was a mass casualty incident on Bourbon Street, the most famous street in New Orleans, and the heart and soul of the French Quarter. At least 15 victims were killed and 35 victims have been hurt as a result of an act of terror. A 42 year old suspect, identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, who is from Texas and is a U.S. Citizen, violently drove a rented pickup truck with an ISIS flag 60 MPH down Bourbon Street killing and injuring victims as well as exchanging gunfire and wounding 2 police officers, before he was killed by responding law enforcement.
This heinous and sinister crime was intentional and the FBI believes that the suspect was not solely responsible. Consequently, IEDs were found in the vehicle and detonated. As a result, several events have been postponed, including the College Football Playoff quarterfinal game at the 2025 Sugar Bowl.
First and foremost, we pray for the families of the victims, first responders, city officials, the citizens and visitors of this great city. If you’re looking for a missing loved one call (504) 539-3266 or 311.
Moving forward, we will stand unified, resilient and will bounce back from this horrific act. The National Action Network (NAN) Greater New Orleans Chapter is open to partner with Rev. Al Sharpton to bring healing to New Orleans, our beloved city.
