NATIONAL ACTION NETWORK (NAN), REV. AL SHARPTON, LABOR LEADERS & COMMUNITY ACTIVISTS TO LEAD MARCH FOR JOBS AND JUSTICE OCTOBER 15
From the Emancipator (Abraham Lincoln) to the Liberator (Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.) the collective journey of civil rights will be reaffirmed
October 5, 2011 (New York, NY) —Rev. Al Sharpton and National Action Network (NAN), along with partners in labor, education, civil rights, and clergy from across the country, will hold a mass march for jobs and justice on October 15, 2011-the weekend of the rescheduled unveiling of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial on the National Mall. The rally and march will be held by thousands of members of the civil rights community and all those who continue to push for jobs and justice. These parties will convene in our nation’s capital to assess our progress and march on for the battles that still lay ahead.
Speakers include Co-Hosts Rev. Al Sharpton and Tom Joyner, and co-sponsors for the event are: Randi Weingarten, President of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and Lee Saunders, Secretary-Treasurer of American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). The event Co-Chairs are: Richard L. Trumka, President of American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), Rev. Dr. W. Franklyn Richardson, Senior Pastor of Grace Baptist Church & Chairman of National Action Network, Dennis Van Roekel, President of National Education Association (NEA), Larry Cohen, President of Communications Workers of America (CWA), George Gresham, President of 1199 SEIU Healthcare Workers East, Marc Morial, President and CEO of the National Urban League, Wade Henderson, President and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights (LCCHR) and Norman Seabrook- President of Correction Officers Benevolent Association (COBA). Michael Baisden, host of the Michael Baisden show is a March partner. The National Clergy Director is Reverend Willie F. Wilson from Union Temple Baptist Church.
A rally preceding the march will begin at 11 a.m. at 15th and Independence at the Sylvan Theater. The march will begin at 1:30 p.m. to the King Memorial site by way of Ohio Drive.

It is NAN’s goal to emphasize what it was that gave Dr. King such an exalted place in American history. It was his work for civil rights and labor rights that made him the historic figure he has become. It was near the grounds of his monument that he was planning a tent city for poor people when he was assassinated. NAN will use the occasion of October 15th to raise this unfinished business and challenge those that seek to undo what Dr. King had tried to do for working people and labor in this country.
NAN’s October 15th march will call attention to key issues that have not been remedied in this country. As working Americans struggle to gain employment and livable wages, we continue to watch rampant foreclosures and fluctuating markets most heavily impacting those that are already suffering under tumultuous financial times.
