REV. SHARPTON TO LEAD MEMORIAL AND RALLY FOR LOS ANGELES FIRE VICTIMS WITH ATTORNEY BEN CRUMP IN PASADENA THIS THURSDAY
—Black Communities in Southern California Among Worst Impacted by Deadly Blazes
NEW YORK, NY (January 31, 2025) – Rev. Al Sharpton, Founder and President of the National Action Network (NAN), will lead a memorial service and rally for victims of the devastating wildfires throughout greater Los Angeles, in an appearance with Attorney Ben Crump, who represents relatives of several Southern Californians killed in the blazes.
“The wildfires scourging Los Angeles these last few weeks have been a devastating humanitarian and natural disaster,” said Rev. Al Sharpton, Founder and President of National Action Network (NAN). “People have lost their homes, their memories, and ultimately their lives to this devastation, while some have sought to use this horrific event to score political points. This Thursday, I will join with Attorney Crump to bring the community together to mourn those we have lost and galvanize them to recover, restore, and rebuild.”
At least 29 people have died just from the Eaton, Pasadena and Palisades fires which began on Jan. 7 and has since destroyed more than 6,000 homes as it raged across tens of thousands of acres.
The Palisades blaze was one of several that have devastated the greater Los Angeles area, including the Eaton Fire that broke out the same day. The 14,000-acre Eaton Fire devastated the predominantly Black area of Altadena — disrupting an aging community that has since lost a significant amount of its generational wealth. A UCLA data brief this week found 48% of Black households lost their homes in the last three weeks, compared with 37% of non-Black households.
