REV. SHARPTON, NAN TO ANNOUNCE NATIONAL DRIVE, ACTION TO SAVE DEI IN SPIRIT OF DR. KING THIS MONDAY

Honorees Including Gov. Wes Moore, Taraji P. Henson, and Phylicia Rashad, to be Recognized for Carrying on Dr. King’s Legacy as Nation Marks 60th Anniversary of Civil Rights Act

NEW YORK, NY (Wednesday, January 10) – Rev. Al Sharpton, President and Founder of the National Action Network (NAN),will host the Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Breakfast at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C. on Monday, January 15th. Rev. Sharpton will be joined by members of the King family on what would have been the civil rights figure’s 95th birthday.

In a major address, Rev. Sharpton will announce NAN will lead a national drive to save diversity, equity, and inclusion policies, which have been under relentless attack from right-wing activists. The direct action campaign comes after Rev. Sharpton led a protest outside the office of hedge fund billionaire Bill Ackman, whose pressure campaign led to the recent resignation of Harvard President Claudine Gay.

Rev. Sharpton and NAN also recognize elected officials, labor leaders, and entertainers who continue to advance Dr. King’s mission. This year’s honorees include:

MLK Day Labor Leader of the Year Award: CWA President Claude Cummings Jr.

MLK Day Visionary Award: Maryland Gov. Wes Moore and Taraji P. Henson, President and Founder, & Tracie Jenkins, Executive Director, of the Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation

MLK Day Youth Award: Deyona Burton, Youth Leader

MLK Day Lifetime Service of Excellence in the Arts Award: Phylicia Rashad, award-winning actress and Dean of Howard University’s Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts

MLK Day Education Award: Becky Pringle, President of NEA
