REV. AL SHARPTON SENDS SUPPORT AND PRAYERS TO NEW ORLEANS VICTIMS AFTER DRIVER INTENTIONALLY RAMS CROWD, KILLING 10

Jan 02, 2025

Notes Resiliency of New Orleans Residents to Come Together in Moments of Challenge

NEW YORK, NY (January 1, 2025) — Rev. Al Sharpton, Founder and President of the National Action Network (NAN), issued the following statement on the violent New Years Day attack on a crowd in New Orleans that killed at least 10 people and injured three dozen more.

“New Year’s Day is supposed to be a moment of hope—an occasion to leave behind the challenges of the previous year and focus on the opportunities ahead. Yet we have begun 2025 with a violent attack by someone with hate in their heart who wanted to strike fear and despair into the hearts of others. This unspeakable tragedy in New Orleans is devastating for the victims, their families, and this entire nation as it is yet another reminder that violence remains a clear and present danger, even at a moment of joy and hope. My deepest condolences are with the victims, their families and all those who have been affected by this senseless act of violence.

That this event occurred in New Orleans is especially heartbreaking. This is a city that has seen cultures build off one another, embodying what America should be. For whatever dark moments there have been in New Orleans’ history, the city today is one in which different communities blend together to create something beautiful. It is why the Essence Festival has been held in New Orleans for so many years. And it is why the people of New Orleans have time and again banded together in times of crisis to come back stronger. I know that whatever pain the people of New Orleans may feel at this moment, they will soon turn it into purpose to address hateful attacks such as what occurred last night.”
