REV. AL SHARPTON SALUTES EPISCOPAL CHURCH STANCE AGAINST TRUMP ADMINISTRATION’S REFUGEE STATUS FOR WHITE SOUTH AFRICANS

May 13, 2025

Controversial Action by Federal Government Comes as Overall Refugee Program Paused

NEW YORK, NY (May 13, 2025) — Rev. Al Sharpton, Founder and President of the National Action Network (NAN), today applauded the Episcopal Church over its opposition of the Trump Administration’s decision to fast-track refugee status for white South Africans, even as the federal government has halted its overall program. Presiding Bishop Sean Rowe on Monday said the Church would pause its relationship with the federal government over its “commitment to racial justice and reconciliation.”

“I commend Bishop Rowe, the Episcopal Church, especially the Episcopal Migration Ministries, for its bravery to stand up against the farce Donald Trump has perpetuated about white South Africans. People all over the world, especially in war-torn parts of Africa, need the help and protection of the United States, yet Trump and MAGA Republicans have left them for dead. They have instead wrapped their arms around largely unsubstantiated claims that white South Africans are being persecuted. It is essential we continue to stand up to and stand together against this administration’s relentless attempts to criticize, ostracize, and dehumanize those who truly need our support.”
