REV. AL SHARPTON RESPONDS TO INDICTMENT AGAINST JORDAN NEELY KILLER DANIEL PENNY

Jun 15, 2023

Salutes Grand Jury for Holding Killer Accountable for Strangling Neely During Mental Health Episode on NYC Subway

New York, NY (June 14, 2023) – Rev. Al Sharpton, Founder and President of the National Action Network (NAN), issued the following statement in response to the reported indictment against Daniel Penny, who strangled Jordan Neely on a Manhattan subway last month. The killing sparked uproar as Neely, who was homeless and experiencing a mental health episode, was captured on cellphone video struggling as Penny held him in a chokehold. Rev. Sharpton delivered Neely’s eulogy last month and condemned Penny’s vigilantism.

“The National Action Network has stood in support of Jordan’s family since day one. This was a clear-cut case of vigilantism that has no place in our society, which is why I spoke against it at Jordan’s funeral. It appears Mr. Penny’s media tour these last few weeks was ineffective. The Manhattan grand jury saw right through his false narrative by voting to move this case forward. While they should be saluted for this righteous step, we wish the charge would have reflected what this really was: murder. NAN will continue to monitor this case to ensure this killer is held accountable and there is justice for Jordan.”
