REV. AL SHARPTON CONDEMNS US DOJ OVER REQUEST OF ONE-DAY SENTENCE FOR OFFICER CONVICTED IN 2020 MURDER OF BREONNA TAYLOR

Jul 17, 2025

Police Shooting, Alongside Killing of George Floyd, Sparked Global Protests
New York, NY (July 17, 2025) – Rev. Al Sharpton, Founder and President of National Action Network (NAN), today blasted the U.S. Department for requesting just one day in prison for the Louisville Police Officer who was convicted for the 2020 murder of Breonna Taylor.
“This is an outrage that spits in the face of Lady Justice. What the Justice Department and the entire Trump Administration have signaled today is an attack on Black, Brown, and all marginalized Americans. To ask for a single day in prison for this officer, who took away the thousands of days Breonna will now never have, flies in the face of justice, civil rights, and humanity. Police entered Breonna’s home without warning, fired several shots through a window, and killed an innocent public servant. The violation of this officer’s oath, the trust the public put in him, and Breonna’s civil rights demands an actual sentence. Instead, the Department of Justice tasked with upholding fairness in the law for those who cannot defend themselves simply wants to walk this officer into a cell and walk him right out. National Action Network continues to fight for Breonna’s legacy and all those unjustly killed by law enforcement.”
