Urge for Intervention Comes as Congressional Republicans Block $40 Million in Aid to Haiti as Crisis Rages On
NEW YORK, NY (March 19, 2024) – Rev. Al Sharpton, President and Founder of the National Action Network (NAN), and Mayor Eric Adams will join with Haitian faith and community leaders in New York City tomorrow to call on the U.S. government to help stabilize Haiti as the nation’s leadership comes under mounting pressure from gangs. Together, the group will also urge the federal government to investigate the flow of U.S. guns being trafficked to aid the gangs, which have brought increased violence to the embattled nation.
The crisis centered in the capital city of Port-Au-Prince has led to mounting pressure for the U.S. to help stabilize the situation. More than 362,000 people have been “internally displaced,” according to the United Nations, with two in three children in need of humanitarian assistance. On Tuesday, Congressional Republicans balked at an additional $40 million in aid requested by the Biden Administration to help quell the situation.
New York City is home to a strong, robust Haitian population – notably in Brooklyn and Queens. Those New Yorkers have felt the impact of the crisis in Haiti, which has put many of their relatives and loved ones at risk.
