PONAN on the Blow to Labor, SCOTUS Decision

Jun 27, 2018

STATEMENT FROM REV. AL SHARPTON REGARDING U.S. SUPREME COURT DECISION TO ROLL BACK PUBLIC SECTOR WORKERS’ RIGHTS

NEW YORK (June 27, 2018) — Rev. Al Sharpton, civil rights leader and president of National Action Network, released the following statement following this morning’s Supreme Court decision regarding public sector unions:

“This morning’s decision deals an existential blow to public-sector employees and the unions that fight for them. Fair share fees have never been about political activity. They’re about making sure workers – all workers – have the most effective and competent counsel possible when it comes to ensuring living wages. Instead, today, workers of all stripes have been once again beaten down by the highest court in the land in favor of billionaires and corporations.

We at National Action Network stand against these mind-bogglingly short-sighted efforts to hollow out real people’s right to fight for a living wage. The court is on the wrong side of history – today, we stand with the millions of hard-working teachers, social workers, firefighters, and others that have recommitted to their unions and are pushing back against efforts to degrade their livelihood and their work.”
