—Discussion with Emmy Award-winning actress and activist comes amid persistent threats access at the ballot box for Black and Brown Americans
New York, NY (Tuesday, April 4, 2023) – Rev. Al Sharpton, Founder and President of the National Action Network (NAN), will sit down with actor, producer, and activist Kerry Washington for a fireside chat on the power of the vote to kick off the NAN Annual Convention on Wednesday, April 12th.

This crucial discussion on the impact of voting comes will help frame the 2023 Convention, the theme of which is “Dealing with the Dream Under Threat” as democracy in the United States faces its greatest challenge in generations. The Convention also comes ahead of the 60th anniversary of the March on Washington later this year as voting rights remain a key issue.
Washington has become one of the nation’s leading activists for stronger voter participation. She has used her platform to ensure people know when elections are, connect them with resources, and turn out to vote.
While voter participation has increased in recent years, the concerted effort to strip voting rights away from Black and Brown Americans remains active. Since the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act a decade ago, states have sought to purge voter rolls, require IDs at the ballot box, and restricting registration. Black, Brown, and poor Americans suffer the most as a result of these policies clearly aimed at stopping them from exercising their fundamental right.
