NEW YORK – Reverend Al Sharpton, president and founder of National Action Network (NAN), released the following statement commending the long overdue removal of the Confederate Flag from the South Carolina Capitol Grounds:

“Today was a momentous day in the fight against racism and intolerance as we finally saw a symbol of hate and injustice come down. I applaud Governor Nikki Haley and the South Carolina State Legislature for taking the Confederate Flag down.

“There is more work to be done and healing to come from the national wound left by the vicious attack on Mother Emmanuel, but we have made great progress today in eliminating an emblem of hatred and bigotry. We honor the memory of the nine men and women who were robbed of their lives in Charleston and look forward to continuing the work to show their deaths were not in vain.”
