NAN JOINS RALLY FOR VOTING RIGHTS AND DEMOCRACY IN ROANOKE, VA
LEADING CIVIL RIGHTS GROUP CALLS ON CONGRESS TO RESTORE THE VOTING RIGHTS ACT
NEW YORK – On Thursday, June 25th, the National Action Network joins other civil rights groups and voting rights advocates at a rally in Roanoke, Virginia to call for a restoration of the Voting Rights Act. This year marks the second anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision to gut the Voting Rights Act, which has allowed politicians across the country to pass discriminatory laws that make it harder for American citizens to exercise their constitutional right to vote. Unfortunately, Congress has failed to pass legislation to remedy the Supreme Court’s egregious mistake even in the face of compelling evidence of disenfranchisement in communities across the country.
“The citizens of the United States have been outraged since the 2013 Supreme Court decision to strike down major parts of the Voting Rights Act (VRA).  The VRA has protected people of color from discrimination for generations. As a result of the Supreme Court’s decision to gut the VRA, politicians across the country have enacted policies that make it harder for millions of Americans to register and vote. As the leading democracy of the world, our voting system should be free, fair, and accessible to all eligible Americans. Men and women gave their lives in pursuit of the principle that we all are “created equal.” Voting gives every American the chance to take control over what happens to their family and their community. Many Americans are still struggling in today’s economy and all Americans deserve a say in how to solve these problems.
“It’s wrong for politicians to manipulate election laws for their own political gain. It undermines our entire democratic and electoral processes.  NAN applauds all of the groups and voting rights advocates participating in this peaceful voting rights rally to ensure all of our voices are heard at ballot box. NAN urges Congress to listen to the American people and act now so that we can restore equal and fair voting conditions to all Americans.”
