5 YEARS AFTER HIS MURDER, THE FAMILY OF GEORGE FLOYD TO BE JOINED BY REV. AL SHARPTON, ATTORNEY BEN CRUMP & NATIONAL LEADERS FOR A GRAVESIDE MEMORIAL

May 20, 2025

Press Conference Immediately After Private Service to Address What Still Needs to Change Half a Decade After Global Protests Over

NEW YORK, NY (May 20, 2025) — Rev. Al Sharpton, Founder and President of the National Action Network (NAN), and Attorney Ben Crump will join the family of George Floyd in Houston this Sunday, on the fifth anniversary of his murder, which sparked months of global protests for racial justice and hundreds of billions of dollars in commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Five years ago this Sunday, Floyd was murdered in Minneapolis after a police officer kneeled on his neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds. Cellphone video of Floyd imploring officers that he couldn’t breathe sparked national outrage across the globe, with protests demanding justice for him and countless other Black and Brown people wrongfully killed by law enforcement. The 2021 conviction of that officer represented one of the first major cases in which someone in law enforcement was held accountable for their actions.

Rev. Sharpton presided over both of Floyd’s funerals — in Minneapolis and in his native Houston — amid the COVID-19 pandemic and joined the family and Attorney Crump at his burial. NAN also helped pay for the funeral costs and worked to safely transport members of his family due in the pandemic. Rev. Sharpton and Attorney Crump also joined members of the Floyd family, including his daughter, in May 2022 when President Biden signed an executive order demanding accountability for federal law enforcement who abuse the public’s trust. The executive order fulfilled a campaign promise Biden made in 2020 after Floyd’s murder to begin holding bad actors in policing accountable — especially as it relates to the unjust killing of Black and Brown people.

On Sunday, Rev. Sharpton and Attorney Crump will lead a private memorial service at Floyd’s gravesite. Immediately after, they will address the media outside the cemetery. From there, they will visit the Houston housing project where Floyd and his siblings grew up.
