IN FINAL PUSH ON EVE OF DECISIVE 2024 ELECTION, REV. AL SHARPTON AND NAN TO MOBILIZE VOTERS IN NORTH CAROLINA

Nov 05, 2024

Activation in the State Reflects Pushback to Explosive, Divisive Remarks from Gubernatorial Candidate Mark Robinson

New York, NY (November 3, 2024) – In the final day before the historic 2024 election, Rev. Al Sharpton and the National Action Network (NAN) will engage Black voters in North Carolina to head to the polls this Tuesday, capping off a nationwide get out the vote tour. The Founder and President of NAN’s presence in the state comes as he’s been directly attacked by Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson as he vies to become governor.

“Black Americans make up one-fifth of North Carolina’s population, which is why our community must make its powerful voice heard on Tuesday,” said Rev. Al Sharpton, Founder and President of NAN. “Every electoral race from President down will decide what kind of nation we are going to live in. This election is not a question of who Black Americans stand for, but who’s standing up for them. NAN will travel Winston-Salem on Monday to remind everyone who can vote of that.”

Since September, Rev. Sharpton has traveled to targeted states with members of the Exonerated Central Park 5 – notably Korey Wise and NYC Council Member Yusef Salaam – as well as Terrence Floyd, the brother of George Floyd. In Philadelphia, Columbus, the Greater Detroit area, Las Vegas, and Baltimore, the civil rights leader has delivered a report on where both candidates stand on issues that most impact Black Americans. In several cities, Wise and Salaam, who also appeared alongside Rev. Sharpton at the Democratic National Convention this summer, discussed the impact of Donald Trump’s vitriolic attacks against them as they were wrongfully convicted as teens.

North Carolina is also home to one of the closest-watched gubernatorial races. Reporting in recent months have found a pattern of alarming remarks Robinson previously made. In on 15-year-old online post, the GOP nominee said police officers should have shot Rev. Sharpton and referred to himself as a “Black NAZI!” in another from that same era.
