NAN 2024 TRIUMPH AWARDS TO CELEBRATE REV. AL SHARPTON’S 70th BIRTHDAY, HONOR GLADYS KNIGHT, ROBERT DE NIRO, WYNTON MARSALIS AND CAROLYN “COOKIE” MASON LUMINARIES

Sep 23, 2024

New York, NY (September 23, 2024) – Rev. Al Sharpton and the National Action Network (NAN) today announced this year’s Triumph Awards recipients will include ten-time Grammy Award winning musician Gladys Knight, two-time Oscar Award winning actor Robert De Niro, nine-time Grammy Award winning musician Wynton Marsalis. This signature event will simultaneously serve as a 70th birthday celebration for Rev. Sharpton and his legacy in fighting for direct action and social justice.

“The Triumph Awards recognize those cultural icons who use their platform to drive social change in their respective fields,” said Rev. Al Sharpton, Founder and President of NAN. “Just a few short weeks ahead of what very well may be the most consequential elections in modern American history, the National Action Network will highlight individuals including Gladys Knight, Robert De Niro, Wynton Marsalis and Cookie Mason, who have never wavered in their commitment to freedom and justice for all Americans irrespective of who they are or what they look like. I could think of few better friends and leaders to celebrate my 70th birthday with than these luminaries.”

**Please fill out this form to apply for credentials to cover this event. We will update you in the coming week with additional information.**

The Triumph Awards celebrates individuals who have made significant contributions to social, racial and economic justice. In the backdrop of pressing civil rights concerns and an election that will determine the fate of our democracy, this year’s ceremony takes on an even more critical role as the nation grapples with violent hate crimes against Black, Brown, Jewish, and AAPI Americans; legislation targeting LGBTQ+ rights; and attacks against Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and other equity initiatives.

Rev. Sharpton and NAN’s 2024 honorees are being recognized for their steadfast efforts in standing up for civil rights. The 2024 honorees include:

Grammy Award-winning musician Gladys Knight

Actor, Producer, Director Robert De Niro

Grammy Award-winning musician Wynton Marsalis

These honorees join a roster of historic leaders, entertainers, and advocates who have fought for a more just, equitable society: Vice President Kamala Harris, Tyler Perry, Angela Basset, Quest Love, Leslie Odom Jr., Queen Latifah and Spike Lee.
