TOMORROW: REV. SHARPTON, NAN KICK OFF JUNETEENTH WEEKEND WITH OLDEST TULSA RACE MASSACRE SURVIVOR AT HOUSE OF JUSTICE
—Rev. Sharpton Welcomes Viola Ford Fletcher, 109, and Her Brother Hughes Van Ellis, 102, for Remembrance of the Black Wall Street Massacre
New York, NY (Saturday, June 17, 2023) – Rev. Al Sharpton, President and Founder of the National Action Network (NAN) Saturday will welcome Viola Ford Fletcher, “Mother Fletcher,” and her younger brother Hughes Van Ellis at the House of Justice in Harlem to mark the beginning of Juneteenth weekend. Ms. Fletcher’s notable appearance in New York City comes as the oldest survivor of one of the deadliest racially motivated massacres in U.S. history promotes her new memoir, “Don’t Let Them Bury My Story.”
Rev. Sharpton will lead the rally in solemn commemoration of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, also known as the Black Wall Street Massacre, while renewing the call for racial justice and equality on the eve of Juneteenth. Fletcher and Van Ellis, two of the last three survivors of the massacre, have carried the weight of history with them for over a century without standing down in the fight for justice and remembrance.
