Frank conversation to serve as call to action for the art form to serve as a vehicle for advocacy and action

New York, NY (April 10, 2023) – Civil rights leader Rev. Al Sharpton, Founder and President of the National Action Network (NAN), today announced hip hop legends Eric B, Maino, Dres, and Attorney James L Walker Jr, Esq. will appear at the Annual Convention for a discussion on April 15^th to explore the legacy of hip hop as the art form turns 50 this year. Music legend Al B. Sure! and Hip-Hop Museum Board Chair Ruben Diaz Jr. will lead the highly anticipated event hosted by Ashley Sharpton.

Held on the Youth Day at the NAN Convention, which will run this year from April 12^th through April 15^th, this marquee discussion will dive into the formation of hip hop, its early influences on advocacy and the civil rights movement, and the art’s historic role in setting the culture. This no-holds-barred conversation will take an honest look at where hip hop has evolved both musically and culturally, as well as where it must go.

The panel, which is still in formation, also seeks to bring together today’s youth with the artists who grew up in hip hop’s early years. The mission is to galvanize the next generation of advocates and artists to continue using hip hop as a vehicle to effect social change.
