On Monday, December 21, Reverend Al Sharpton will deliver the keynote address and engage with students from New York City high schools at a Career Awareness Assembly at the Humanities & The Arts Magnet High School. Education for a Better America and College Summit are convening this unique opportunity for low-income students to make the connection between attending college and achieving their life goals. In addition to career readiness workshops and spotlight speakers, representatives from Macy’s will facilitate a “Dress for Success” workshop, showing students how to present themselves at job interviews and networking events. Career Awareness Assemblies are a part of the Career Awareness and Preparation portion of the 3C Campaign (College, Career & Civic Engagement), a three-pronged program designed to impact the lives of New York City high school students.

As a leading national civil rights leader and President and Founder of the National Action Network (NAN), Reverend Sharpton will shine a bright light on the opportunity challenges facing low-income students. Today, only 9 percent of low-income students complete college, but by 2020, 65 percent of all jobs will require a college degree.

“We can’t think of anyone better suited than Reverend Sharpton to inspire these students to reach for college as a way to unleash their potential,” says Dr. Marcus Bright, Executive Director at Education for a Better America.

Education for a Better America develops programs for urban high school students to increase the pursuit of post-secondary education. This Career Awareness Assembly is a part of the Career Awareness and Preparation portion of their 3C Campaign – College, Career, & Civic Engagement- a three-pronged program designed to impact the lives of New York City high school students.

College Summit leverages the power of peer influence to increase college enrollment in partner schools across the country. The national nonprofit trains, deploys and coaches teams of students, or Peer Leaders, to boost college preparation and enrollment for their entire school. At the Career Awareness Assembly, hundreds of College Summit Peer Leaders from New York area schools will start planning for their professional futures.

“A student who makes the connection between college and his or her life goals is six times more likely to attain a degree than one who doesn’t. It is crucial that we offer all students the opportunity to hear from leaders in their community who have the power to help them take ownership of their futures,” says Keith Frome, CEO of College Summit.
