REV. AL SHARPTON RESPONDS TO STATEMENTS MADE BY FERGUSON MAYOR JAMES KNOWLES ON THE DOJ’S POLICE DEPT FINDINGS
“The Mayor’s remarks were mostly evasive, insignificant, and showed a total failure to address the need for a change in leadership at the police department.
The DOJ stated clearly that there was an engagement by police in systemic and abusive racial profiling. To put three officers under investigation and terminate one for racist emails fails to address the multiple patterns of racial bias outlined in the Justice Department report.
The establishment of a Civilian Review Board and other solutions proposed by the Mayor were a step in the right direction but the lack of accountability from those in charge of policing, who have openly engaged in targeted abusive behavior, makes the announcements about moving forward ring hollow in the ears of every concerned citizen.”

NAN led many protests and rallies in Ferguson, MO, immediately following Mike Brown’s death and Rev. Sharpton was the eulogist at Mike Brown’s funeral at the request of the Brown family last August.
