National Action Network (NAN) Sacramento Participates in the Medgar Evers GOTV 2024 Election Rally
—
On August 28, 2024, the Medgar Evers GOTV 2024 Election Rally took place at the West Steps of the California State Capitol, where NAN Sacramento proudly participated in promoting responsible voting. The rally honored the enduring legacy of Medgar Evers, a civil rights leader who championed justice, equality, and the right to vote and whose work remains pivotal in advancing voting rights for African Americans.
Dr. Tecoy Porter, Senior Pastor of Genesis Church and President of NAN Sacramento, contributed by delivering the invocation. Dr. Porter reminded attendees that voting is not only a right but also a sacred responsibility. Drawing from Romans 11:29, he urged voters to recognize the sacrifices made by past generations and approach the voting process with intentionality and purpose. He emphasized the importance of every race and proposition, from national elections to local school boards. The event, organized under the theme “Vote Responsibly,” was a key part of broader get-out-the-vote efforts. Community leaders, including Betty Williams and Dwayne Crenshaw, spoke on the significance of the upcoming election. Attendees also participated in voter registration drives and discussed critical propositions affecting education, economic policies, and criminal justice reforms.
Through this collaboration, NAN Sacramento reinforced the importance of civic engagement and the power of every vote in shaping the future of communities.

BLACK HEALTH EQUITY
Dr. Porter participated as a Faith in Health Champion for Smoke-Free Communities during the SOL Project and AMPLIFY’s Information & Education (I&E) Day at the California State Capitol. At this event, he and his colleagues engaged with members of both the California State Senate and Assembly to raise awareness and educate legislators about the health risks associated with tobacco and marijuana smoke in African American communities, highlighting this as a critical black health equity issue. A key moment was meeting with Assemblymember Lori Wilson and Assemblymember Akilah Weber of the California Legislative Black Caucus. To learn more, visit The SOL Project.
RECOGNITIONS BY SENATOR ASHBY AND THE CITY OF ELK GROVE FOR BEING 2024 CHAPTER OF THE YEAR!!
Dr. Tecoy Porter and board members were pleasantly surprised by the City of Elk Grove and Senator Angelique Ashby’s office for their recent recognition as “Chapter of the Year” by Rev. Al Sharpton at this year’s National Convention in New York City. We are certainly grateful to be recognized for this accomplishment by our civic partners and are inspired to continue to make “good trouble” with them.
