Costco in Union, New Jersey to shop in support of the company’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI)
—NEW YORK, NY (January 2025) – Rev. Al Sharpton, accompanied by Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and National Action Network’s Northeast Regional Director Pastor Steffie Bartley, this Saturday will lead more than 100 National Action Network (NAN) members to the Costco in Union, New Jersey to shop in support of the company’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the face of attacks on the policy from President Trump and private sector leaders. This Saturday’s “buy-cott” follows NAN’s successful effort at the wholesaler’s East Harlem location last week and Rev. Sharpton’s MLK Day announcement that NAN will lead a strategic boycott in the next 90 days of two companies that have dropped their DEI commitments amid public pressure.
“In a time when too many businesses are immediately bending to the ever-shifting political winds, abandoning their values to appease fleeting trends, Costco stands out as a company making sound choices rooted in principle and the best interests of its workforce and shareholders,” said Rev. Al Sharpton, Founder and President of NAN. “It’s essential for Black consumers to respond in kind by demonstrating the value of our dollar. As NAN strategizes targeted boycott efforts, we’re going to continue to show our support for businesses like Costco that are wise and courageous enough to stand firm in their values.”
Rev. Sharpton formally announced the upcoming effort to boycott companies rolling back their DEI initiatives during NAN’s MLK Day Rally at Metropolitan AME Church in Washington, D.C. His remarks on the need to safeguard DEI were delivered as Trump was sworn in as president for the second time, promising to target federal DEI programs in his inaugural address…
