Statement from the South Carolina Chapter of NAN on the Guilty Plea of the Officer that Killed Walter Scott

Today’s guilty plea in Federal court by Former North Charleston police officer Michael Slager for violating Walter Scott’s civil rights by shooting him five times is a major victory for National Action Network (NAN) and the civil rights community.

NAN stands with the family of Walter Scott as they announce their satisfaction that former police officer Michael Slager has finally been brought to justice for the murder of their son and brother Mr. Walter Scott, Jr. NAN has been with the Scott family from the very beginning of this painful ordeal.

Mrs. Judy Scott, the mother of Walter Scott, and other members of the Scott family, were special guests of the National Action Network at our annual convention last week in New York City. At the convention Mrs. Scott participated on a panel with other “Mothers of the Movement” including Ms. Sabrina Fulton, the mother of Trayvon Martin, Mrs. Gwen Carr, the mother of Eric Garner and other mothers whose sons were killed by unjustified police action. The panel was entitled “How Do You Govern Policing in the Age of Trump?” On the panel Mrs. Judy Scott spoke with pain and eloquence about what she had gone through and the family has been through in the wake of the murder of her son and about what she thought could be done in the future to prevent the unjustified murder by police of innocent black men and women.

National Action Network continues to call on the cities of North Charleston and Charleston to audit their respective police departments for racial bias and to make policy changes to reduce racial profiling and unjustified force against black and brown people.
