Why We March

The Commitment March will take place on August 28th, 2020 — the 57th anniversary of the historic March on Washington, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" Speech. Announced by Rev. Al Sharpton during George Floyd's memorial it is co-convened by Martin Luther King, III.

This intergenerational inclusive day of action will demonstrate our advocacy for comprehensive police accountability reform, the Census, and mobilizing voters for the November elections.

Schedule of Events

Friday, August 28th

Gather at 7:00 a.m.
Pre-Program from 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Program from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
March at 1:00 p.m.
Conclude by 3:00 p.m.

FAQ

Q: Can we bring flags and banners?

A: Flags are allowed, but not on a pole. Posters and signs are allowed, but not with wooden sign posts. Instead, we encourage people to use cardboard sign posts.

Q: What should I wear?

A: Please plan accordingly and dress for the weather. Especially if the temperatures are higher than normal, standing outside for hours at a time may impact you.

Q: Can I bring folding chairs so that we can take rest?

A: Folding chairs are not permitted. If there are specific medical needs that you cannot have met with regular accommodations please contact [email protected]

Q: Will there be a modified route for people with disabilities or limited mobility?

A: There will be a modified route for the march. We ask that people assess their own ability to march and make needed arrangements to participate.

Q: What if I get arrested?

A: Please note that we are working with local and federal law enforcement and do not intend to engage in any civil disobedience. We expect all marches to abide by all laws and any instruction of law enforcement. Finally, we are planning a peaceful demonstration and are training marshals in a deescalation tactics and ask that all marches remain peaceful.
