REV. AL SHARPTON ON NATIONAL ACTION NETWORK’S ANTI-OSCAR CAMPAIGN
NEW YORK – Rev. Al Sharpton, President and founder of National Action Network (NAN), has announced he will convene a series of meetings and conference calls immediately to launch a serious campaign for people to tune out the Oscars. Rev. Sharpton spoke with Spike Lee before his announcement and NAN’s Los Angeles Chapter was the first civil rights group to come out on this. Rev. Al Sharpton has set up calls with leading activists and clergy to effectively show that Americans will turn off anything that does not represent the broad cultural and diverse contributions of American entertainment.

January 14, 2015 (Los Angeles, CA) Reverend K.W. Tulloss, President of the L.A. National Action Network, Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable President Earl Ofari Hutchinson, Najee Ali, President of Project Islamic Hope and other civil rights leaders on Thursday, January 14, called for a National “TV Tune Out” of the Oscars awards ceremony, February 28.
“The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences made many promises last year to promote diversity in its film awards. It kept none of them. The proof is that despite a number of name, qualified black performers in major films, not one was nominated for an Academy award,” says Tulloss, Ali, and Hutchinson, “There’s only one thing that Hollywood understands and that’s dollars and ratings. We will launch a nationwide “TV Tune Out” of the Oscars ceremony, February 28. This will send the message that diversity in the film industry must be more than a hollow promise.
