NATIONAL ACTION NETWORK RESPONDS TO BIDEN SAFER AMERICA PLAN

The National Action Network issued the following statement in response to President Biden’s Safer America Plan, which he outlined today during a speech in Pennsylvania.
“To build and sustain fairness and accountability within the criminal justice system, we cannot go back to a restoration approach of the traditional social order. The unbalanced approach to public safety and threatening law and order rhetoric have been used as tools to intimidate Black Americans and limit voting rights.
Beyond criminal justice reform, we must redefine public safety while advocating investment in community-led alternatives, not fear.
Today’s announcements incorporate community resources like mental health services, alternative responders, and community violence intervention (CVI) programs. However, we encourage the White House to focus on increasing funding for these evidence-based public safety initiatives and recidivism, ensuring that our communities needs and the unique challenges they face are met with evolving policies.
National Action Network continues to call on the 117th Congress to pass federal legislation! Legislation will serve as a long-term solution for accountability of the actions of bad actors within law enforcement, acting as a companion to the Executive Order on Advancing Effective, Accountable Policing, and Criminal Justice Practices to Enhance Public Trust and Public Safety to begin to restore community trust fully. We will continue to monitor the implementation of this plan and encourage everyone to read it.”
