REV. SHARPTON APPLAUDS THE WHITE HOUSE’S “UNITED WE STAND” SUMMIT TO COMBAT VIOLENT EXTREMISM

Comes In Wake of May Buffalo Shooting and calls from Rev. Sharpton and NAN to Convene a Hate Crimes Summit

New York, NY (Friday, August 22, 2022) – Rev. Al Sharpton, Founder and President of the National Action Network (NAN), issued the following statement on the White House’s announcement of the “United We Stand” summit to combat violent extremism and racially-motivated violence. As Rev. Sharpton and NAN covered the funeral costs and eulogized victims following the Buffalo, NY shooting in May, he called on the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and the National Urban League (NUL) to join his request of the White House to host a summit addressing mass shootings and hate crimes nationwide.

“In the wake of Buffalo and countless other hate crimes and mass shootings, we wanted to see substance, not rhetoric. People are tired of thoughts and prayers; they want action and true leadership. I’m glad to see the White House is convening this summit to combat violent extremism and hope it will lead to substantive policy changes, so that we can put these grave times behind us. When I traveled to Buffalo to deliver the eulogies for several of the victims, I stood with their families and called on President Biden to immediately convene leaders in the Black, Latinx, AAPI, and Jewish communities to address the rise in violent hate crimes. I’m grateful to see that this call to action has been heard and look forward to the outcomes of this summit.”
