Rev. Sharpton Marches with Democratic Candidates & John Lewis in Honor of 55th Anniversary of the Selma March
(SELMA, AL) — On Sunday, March 1st, Rev. Sharpton and NAN were joined by US Civil Rights Leaders, Politicians, and 2020 Democratic Candidates in the march and events marking the 55th anniversary of “Bloody Sunday,” when white police attacked black marchers in Selma, Alabama.
On March 7th, 1956, Alabama state troopers beat and tear-gassed hundreds trying to march from Selma to Montgomery, the capital, in demonstration of voting rights. Rep. John Lewis was among those injured, and 55 years later, he leads the march.
Also joining in on the reenactment of the walk over the famed Edmund Pettus Bridge were 2020 Democratic Candidates including Vice President Joe Biden, former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Amy Klobuchar and former Mayor Pete Buttigieg.
