It is revered as the greatest night in entertainment. Actors, directors, producers, writers and the like all convene for this extraordinary yearly event. It is the culmination of their seemingly endless dedication to their craft, and for many, the pinnacle of their careers. Some wait an entire lifetime to attend, while others are blessed to be nominated for their very first film. Dressed in their most coveted attire, strolling along the most infamous red carpet, these attendees collectively pay homage to artistic expression and creativity. Every year we are surprised, proud and sometimes left asking questions. And Sunday night’s 2010 Academy Awards were no exception.

HBCUs and the President

It’s difficult for most of us to imagine a time when Blacks were legally prohibited from engaging in one of the most basic fundamental human rights: educating one’s self. The simple act of learning, growing and developing was blatantly against the law. Illiteracy was one of the greatest forms of control, for without the ability to read and write, a man was automatically guaranteed a life of servitude. Once slavery was abolished, higher learning was still reserved for Whites only and thus the individual ability to advance and better yourself, was limited by institutional forces. It wasn’t until the establishment of Historically Black Colleges and Universities that the aspirations of equality and prosperity for an entire group of people finally came to fruition. Today, these same institutions continue to level the playing field in an unjust system of haves and have nots, and I couldn’t be more elated to learn that the President of the United States feels the same way.

Our Meeting with the President

It was a blistery Wednesday afternoon as Washington, D.C. was bombarded with a blizzard that dumped anywhere from 1 ½ to 2 feet of snow. Schools were closed, streets were vacant and most federal offices were even shut down. But amidst the massive winter storm, one location remained vividly functioning as the President of the United States welcomed our arrival. And Marc Morial of the National Urban League, Benjamin Jealous of the NAACP and I couldn’t have been more anxious to trudge through the snow for a more pertinent cause than the cause of rectifying catastrophic unemployment.

Unemployment Still Sky High

Picture a small child, no more than 10 years old, who is forced to leave school, say goodbye to his/her friends and abandon the only home they ever knew. Imagine this young boy or girl milling through piles of garbage for scraps of our leftovers, and then illegally working an odd job to bring in a few dollars for the family. Can you fathom a world where these precious children lose every opportunity for a sustainable future and an equal footing with the rest of us? Sleeping in tents, in cardboard boxes, in overcrowded shelters - if they are lucky - and simply on the streets in many cases, these homeless little ones are often losing the battle for existence even before their lives have truly begun. And despite common perception, this scenario I’m describing isn’t confined to a third world country or a nation off in some distant land, but rather it’s taking place right in our own backyard. Everyday, millions of our young go to bed hungry in the United States, and in this time of dire economic circumstances, those numbers continue to climb at alarming rates.

Rev. on State of the Union Address

In 1913, President Woodrow Wilson broke rank and decided to deliver his State of the Union address in person, as opposed to sending in a written message as was tradition for decades. Since that time, every serving U.S. President has appeared before Congress and members of the Supreme Court and Cabinet to articulate his stance on the current state of the nation. This annual tradition allows the President to not only encourage and unite the union, but also set the tone and agenda for the upcoming year. A President’s vernacular and take on issues will, after all, lay the framework for how the country as a whole should proceed forward. Addressing the major domestic and international dilemmas of the day, the President provides a concise vision for both elected officials and the larger citizenry to follow. Last Wednesday, our 44th President did just that – and then some.
